San Diego Financial Literacy Center Creates Comprehensive Financial Literacy Program for At-Risk and Low-Income San Diegans
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 12, 2016 — San Diego Financial Literacy Center (SDFLC) announces a $28,000 contribution from the Foundation for Financial Planning to assist with the creation of the Financial Education Alliance of San Diego (FEASD). The alliance will bring together 9 local organizations who will provide financial empowerment and resources to hundreds of at-risk and low-income residents, through six free events around San Diego County where they can meet with volunteer certified financial planners in a one-on-one setting. Organizations involved in the FEASD include the Foundation for Financial Planning, the County of San Diego Department of Housing & Community Development, County of San Diego – Health & Human Services Agency, County of San Diego – Office of Military & Veterans Affairs, Financial Planning Association of San Diego County (FPA), Live Well San Diego (LWSD), Military Veteran’s Resource Center (MVRC), San Diego OASIS, and The Wealth Consulting Group.
The 2016 event series will kick off with a “Smart With Your Money Financial Opportunity Clinic” on Saturday, Feb. 20 at San Diego OASIS where attendees will be able to learn about personal finances, retirement, investing, insurance, budgeting and saving.
“We are excited to support the San Diego Financial Literacy Center on this collective impact project,” said Jon Dauphiné, executive director, Foundation for Financial Planning.
“The Smart With Your Money Financial Opportunity Clinics will provide members of the San Diego community access to pro-bono financial professionals in one-on-one sessions to help develop their financial well-being.”
The goal is to develop a collective impact that will have far reaching benefits for the entire community. Special attention will be paid to the lowest socioeconomic neighborhoods, as well as military and Spanish-speaking populations.
According to SDFLC, these events are vital to the community as many San Diegans (up to 70 percent in certain communities) live paycheck to paycheck and have not developed a financial plan that includes savings, investing, and future planning. Additionally 62.5 percent of San Diegans do not have an emergency fund with more than $400 to handle an unexpected crisis – which leads to over use and abuse of high interest lending options; especially in the low to moderate income communities. These trend towards outcomes that include: higher incidences of bankruptcy, foreclosures, poor credit scores and high debt-to-income ratios.

We aim to break the cycle of money mismanagement and a key step to doing that are these free financial planning clinics,” said Brad Pagano, co-founder and managing director, San Diego Financial Literacy Center. “We are honored to work with the Foundation for Financial Planning as well as members of the Financial Education Alliance of San Diego (FEASD) to provide guidance on the most pressing financial concerns of the citizens of San Diego County.”
